"À" or "en" Avignon? -

Le récent décès du pape François a suscité l'émotion dans le monde entier. En ce moment de recueillement mondial, impossible de ne pas penser aux lieux qui ont joué un rôle clé dans l'histoire de l'Église, parmi lesquels la ville d'Avignon.

Avignon est peut-être surtout connue pour son pont emblématique, où des générations ont dansé en cercles joyeux. Mais l'histoire de la ville va bien au-delà de cette chanson enfantine adorée. Grâce à sa situation privilégiée le long du Rhône, Avignon a prospéré comme plaque tournante commerciale et, au XIVe siècle, est devenue le siège d'une papauté divisée.

Aujourd'hui, Avignon se trouve à un autre carrefour : culturel. Idéalement située sur la ligne TGV reliant Paris, Lyon et Marseille, elle accueille désormais le plus grand festival de théâtre au monde, attirant artistes et spectateurs du monde entier.

The recent passing of Pope Francis has sparked emotion around the world. In this moment of global reflection, it's impossible not to think of the places that have played a key role in the history of the Church, including the city of Avignon.

Avignon is perhaps best known for its iconic bridge, where generations have danced in joyful circles. But the city's history goes far beyond this beloved children's song. Thanks to its privileged location along the Rhône River, Avignon flourished as a commercial hub and, in the 14th century, became the seat of a divided papacy.

Today, Avignon stands at another crossroads: a cultural one. Ideally located on the TGV high-speed train line connecting Paris, Lyon, and Marseille, it now hosts the world's largest theater festival, attracting artists and audiences from around the globe.
